Arkea-Samsic's Warren Barguil is set to return to competition at the Volta a Catalunya. The rider suffered a heavy crash that made the team and the rider fear for a bad injury.

The rider crashed at the second stage of Paris-Nice, in which the peloton was very active and nervous due to the wind. Despite the first examinations pointed out at a double fracture of the cervical vertebra, tests done the day after ruled that out and confirmed a whiplash injury that required a 10-day immobilization.

Barguil was examined again and Arkea-Samsic's doctor Jean-Jacques Menuet cleared him to return to competition. "Victim of a severe crash at the recent Paris-Nice, Warren Barguil was diagnosed with a minimal cervical sprain," he commented. "For safety and for the rider's health, a complete radiographic assessment was carried out again today.

"The results were completely normal and allow the rider to resume competition."

The rider happily welcomed the news. "I am happy and relieved to be alright," Barguil commented. "I was very well supervised by Stevenn Coadic and the physiotherapists of the team, based in Quimper. I recovered fairly quickly after my crash, although during the first three days due to the shock, I slept a lot.

"I received a lot of messages, I was particularly touched and I still want to thank everyone. I resumed training gradually this week, without putting pressure on me, just to find the sensations. And tonight, I got the medical green light to resume the competition. I love the Volta a Catalunya but I know that physically, I won't be 100% next week. I simply need to find myself in the peloton quickly after leaving Paris-Nice prematurely. I'm just glad this story is behind me."
