Team Sunweb's Michael Matthews has taken the victory of the second stage in the Volta a Catalunya. The rider was the strongest at the uphill finish and crossed the line ahead of Alejandro Valverde and Daryl Impey.

The peloton faced a 166.7-kilometre route in the second stage of the Spanish race, which featured a profile that included three climbs of the third category. Astana's Jonas Gregaard Wisly, CCC Team's Josef Cerny and Wanty-Gobert's Marco Minnaard formed the escape of the day, which took an advantage of more than seven minutes over the peloton.

With 35 kilometres to go and as the peloton got to the escapees, there was a crash in the back that involved mainly Chris Froome (Sky) and Jay McCarthy (Bora-hansgrohe). The two riders, along with others like Ben O'Connor (Dimension Data) and Lotto Soudal's Remy Mertz were left behind by the peloton.

In the last kilometres there were several attacks by riders like Cofidis' Darwin Atapuma and Bora-hansgrohe's Maximilian Schachmann, but they were neutralised by a fast pack. Mitchelton-Scott's Daryl Impey was the first rider to launch the final sprint but was overtaken by Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb).

Alejandro Valverde (Sunweb), Impey, Schachmann and Wanty-Gobert's Christian Odd Eiking completed the top five of the day. The winner of the opening stage of the race, Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) keeps the lead of the General Classification.

The third stage of the Volta a Catalunya will be the first real climbing stage, with a finish in the Vallter 2000 ski resort over a route that includes one climb of the third category, two of the first category and a finish on a hors-category climb.
