Michael Matthews has taken the win at the second stage of the Volta a Catalunya after a day in which Team Sunweb made an outstanding work to put the rider in the best position for the final metres.

Sunweb was at the front of the peloton throughout the second day of the Spanish race to set a pace that would allow to catch the escapees on time and force a final sprint, trusting the good legs of Matthews to finish off the work at the uphill finish. The Australian did his part and crossed the finish line ahead of Alejandro Valverde and Daryl Impey.

"Coming into the final kilometres I was able to move up to the front on the downhill and flat before the climb to the finish," the rider explained at the finish line. "I positioned myself near Valverde as I thought he was the favourite for the day.

"I timed my sprint really well, starting with 150 metres to go and managed to hold everyone off. The team rode really well from the start, we were always in control of the race and never let it get out of hand and came out with the win. I’m happy to get the win for them."
