Mitchelton-Scott's Adam Yates has shown a strong condition by taking the victory of the Queen Stage at the Volta a Catalunya. The rider climbed to the second position of the General Classification, seconds behind Thomas De Gendt.

The rider was part of the front group at the last climb of the third stage of the Spanish race and had the legs to sprint to victory and take the second place of the overall standing, just days after he finished second in Tirreno-Adriatico.

"Last week I showed that I was in good condition, I came up short there and I really wanted to win today," he commented. "On the climb (Egan) Bernal and (Nairo) Quintana were really strong when they attacked I held back a little bit just to pace my effort and slowly, slowly came back to them.

"Then it was a bit of a game. Quintana didn't really want to work and in the end, it was a sprint with 200 metres to go and I managed to finish it off.

The fourth stage of the race will also be a challenge for the climbers, with three climbs of the first category, one hors-category and last ascent to the finish line in La Molina. "Tomorrow we have another tough stage and another possibly for a stage win but we will see," Yates explained.

"So far so good, the team did a super job to look after me, so more of the same tomorrow hopefully."
