Bora-hansgrohe's Maximilian Schachmann has taken a solo victory at the fifth stage of the Volta a Catalunya. The rider was the lone survivor of the breakaway and managed to hold a gap until the end.

The peloton faced a 188.1-kilometre route at the fifth stage of the Spanish race featuring a rolling course. The day started with the escape of Bora-hansgrohe's Max Schachmann and EF Education First's Tejay Van Garderen and later on they were joined by Movistar's Andrey Amador and Jumbo-Visma's Bert-Jan Lindeman.

This front group created a gap of more than three minutes with a peloton that was pulled by teams like Arkea-Samsic, Dimension Data and Sunweb. At eleven kilometres to go, Schachmann attacked and left his companions struggling behind.

At a bit more than five kilometres to go, Sunweb's Wilco Kelderman hit the deck in a roundabout and had to be attended by the race doctors at the spot.

Schachmann entered the last two kilometres with an advantage of more than 20 seconds over a pack in which Sunweb and Mitchelton-Scott took turns to reduce the gap with the escapee.

Schachmann managed to hold the gap until the end and crossed the finish line by himself, taking his second victory of the season. Sunweb's Michael Matthews, Dimension Data's Ryan Gibbons, Mitchelton-Scott's Daryl Impey and CCC's Patrick Bevin completed the top five of the day.

Team Sky's Egan Bernal suffered a mechanical problem in the last kilometre and instead of changing bikes, he carried his bike and walked to the finish line receiving the applause of the public present, which included many Colombians.

Astana's Miguel Angel Lopez crossed the finish line with the pack and hold the GC lead.
