Team Sunweb's Wilco Kelderman has suffered a crash in the last kilometres of the Volta a Catalunya's fifth stage that left him with two fractures.
Kelderman hit the deck at one of the roundabouts of the closing kilometres of stage five in the Spanish race. He had to withdraw at the moment and he had to be attended by the race doctors right on the ground.
The Dutchman has undergone several examinations that have determined his injuries.
"An x-ray has revealed Wilco has broken his left collarbone and suffered a neck vertebrae fracture in the fall," said team physician Anko Boelens. "Our first impression is that the fracture is stable.
"He will most likely need surgery for the collarbone when returning back to the Netherlands. Once we've completed more checks, we will be able to give an update on the estimated recovery time in the coming days."
