Team Sunweb's Michael Matthews has taken the victory of the sixth stage of the Volta a Catalunya. The Australian crossed the line ahead of Phil Bauhaus and Daryl Impey.

The pack faced a 169.1-kilometre in the sixth stage of the Spanish race. The escape of the day was formed by five riders and included names like Josef Cerny (CCC Team), Floris de Tier (Jumbo-Visma) and Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R La Mondiale), and it took a gap of more than three minutes with the peloton.

Behind them, Dimension Data, Bahrain-Merida, Sunweb and Mitchelton-Scott took charge of the pace to force a bunch finale, while Astana made sure to protect Miguel Angel Lopez' General Classification lead. The escapees were caught at 12 kilometres from the end and the pack speed up in the last 10 kilometres which caused crashes that affected riders like Oscar Rodriguez (Euskadi-Murias) and Niklas Eg (Trek-Segafredo).

Bora-hansgrohe's Davide Formolo tried his luck in the last kilometres and was followed by Lopez, but the peloton made sure to catch them for a fast finale. Sunweb's Michael Matthews crossed the finish line in the first position at only centimetres from Bahrain-Merida's Phil Bauhaus, while Mitchelton-Scott's Daryl Impey finished in the third position.

Lopez managed to keep the GC lead ahead of the last season of the race that will cover a 143.1 kilometres route with start and finish in Barcelona and features a rolling profile.
