Astana's Miguel Angel Lopez crossed the finish line with the favourites' group and confirmed his victory in the Volta a Catalunya. The Colombian took the 21st victory of the season for the Kazakh team.

The rider and Astana could defend his GC lead, despite the action-filled stage they were facing. "I am super happy with this victory! It is something great!" Lopez commented. "Together with the team we considered this race as one of the main points in the beginning of the season and today we could complete our goal.

"It was a nice race and I had the great support of my team. I felt good during the whole week here in Catalunya, and, at the same time, I was improving day by day. After my win atop La Molina, I believed that together we can do it until the end. I thank all the team for this week! It is our common, Astana Pro Team victory!"

In the second half of the last stage of the Spanish race, Adam Yates attacked along with his brother Simon and put at risk Lopez' overall win for a moment, but the Colombian and his team controlled the situation the best they could. "We knew the rivals were going to try something on Montjuic, so we were ready," Lopez explained.

"I had strong teammates next to me and they did an absolutely incredible job! In every moment of the race, even when Adam Yates went away, we tried to keep calmness, gaining the terrain back second by second. In the end, it worked out perfectly and I could save my jersey. It was a super hard day on the road but I’ve got the final victory for my team and now I am happy!"
