Tony Gallopin and Romain Bardet have crashed out of the Volta a Catalunya. The AG2R La Mondiale riders suffered several injuries in a massive crash that happened at 40 kilometres from the finish line.

The French riders were forced to abandon because of the injuries they suffered at the crash on the last day of the Spanish race. "Tony Gallopin suffers from trauma to his left shoulder," said AG2R La Mondiale doctor Arthur Molique. "He will take additional exams at the beginning of the week.

"Romain Bardet suffers from a blow to the ribs with suspected fractures that will require further examinations."

The crash happened at a descent that had shown in the past to be dangerous. "We were going downhill at 70 km/h," said Gallopin. "It happened very quickly. I found myself thrown to the pavement and flew over the bike. Considering the violence of the fall, it could have been more serious.

"The crash was very severe because we were descending very fast," added Bardet. "I have hurt my ribs, but the effects could have been much worse. I am now waiting for the results of the additional examinations. This was not the expected result for this big block of races in March."

Both riders have returned to France where they will undergo further tests. Axel Domont, who crashed at the fifth stage of the race, has been diagnosed with trauma of the right clavicle, without fracture, and a fracture of the pelvis at the top of the right hip, which will leave him out of competition for at least six weeks.
