The Union Cycliste Internationale has confirmed that 23 teams have stated their interest in applying for a WorldTour license for the 2020-2022 period.
The UCI affirmed that 23 teams have applied for a WorldTour license for the three-year period of 2020-2022. The cycling governing body has explained in the past that from 2020, the teams will have three divisions: UCI WorldTeams, UCI ProTeams (currently known as Professional Continental Teams) and UCI Continental Teams.
Each of the WorldTeams will have a license for three years that is given after a full evaluation of all the candidate teams "according to ethical, administrative, financial and organisational criteria," explained the UCI some months ago. "The teams will need to fulfil these criteria every year. The sporting criterion will be evaluated at the end of a three-year period. The UCI WorldTeams will comprise 27 to 30 professional riders."
All the current 18 WorldTour teams have shown their interest in remaining in the highest division of the sport and four Professional Continental formations have also applied to climbed to the top division: Arkea-Samsic, B&B Hotels-Vital Concept, Direct Energie, Cofidis (France) and Israel Cycling Academy (Israel).
These teams along with AG2R La Mondiale, Astana, Bahrain-Merida, Bora-hansgrohe, CCC Team, Deceuninck-Quick-Step, EF Education First, Groupama-FDJ, Lotto Soudal, Movistar, Mitchelton-Scott, Jumbo-Visma, Katusha-Alpecin, Ineos, Sunweb, Dimension Data, Trek-Segafredo and UAE-Team Emirates, will compete for 18 spots for 2020.
