The final decision of Mathieu van der Poel's participation at the World Championships of Yorkshire will be in the hands of the rider. The Dutch national coach stated that the position of leader would be his if he decides to go.

Van der Poel's performance at the Amstel Gold Race has not only amazed the fans of the sport, but also the coach of the Netherlands, Koos Moerenhout. "I was in the car with Leo van Vliet (race director of the Amstel Gold Race)," he commented to Dutch newspaper AD. "Everyone assumed that it was going to be a sprint between (Julian) Alaphilippe and (Jakob) Fuglsang, but (Michal) Kwiatkowski and then the group came along, including Mathieu van der Poel."

The rider has become one of the favourites to take the rainbow jersey at the World Championships of Yorkshire, England, as the route of the two races is similar, but he still has to make the call. "If he goes to the World Championships and is perfectly prepared as he is now by focusing on the Spring, then he belongs here," Moerenhout explained.

"So it is primarily a decision for Mathieu. He has to see if it fits in his program considering that he will have activities on mountain bike and in preparation for the cyclocross season. We will talk about it soon and then he will make a decision, but Mathieu has shown that he can make good choices."

Van der Poel has finished his road season and he will prepare for mountain bike, a discipline in which he expects to win a medal at the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020. But his team, Corendon-Circus, also agrees that the course of Yorkshire suits the rider well, but will not force him to take any decisions just yet.
