Team Sky's Pavel Sivakov has triumphed at the second stage of the Tour of the Alps. The Russian rider launched a final attack and crossed the mountain finish line eight seconds ahead of Jan Hirt.

The second stage of the race was the longest one in the entire competition with 178.7 kilometres and took the peloton over a route that included one climb of the third category, one of the first category and a mountain finish. The breakaway of the day was formed by six riders and included names like Amador Castaño, Sergio Samitier and Giovanni Visconti.

The first rider to cross the highest climb of the Tour of the Alps was Samitier, who also became the new KOM leader, while the pack was led by a Bahrain-Merida that set a pace that left behind many riders. The descent broke the pack even more and Vincenzo Nibali tried once again to escape, but Bora-hansgrohe and Team Sky managed to control him.

With ten kilometres to go, Pavel Sivakov (Sky), Hermann Pernsteiner (Bahrain-Merida), Nikita Stalnov , Jan Hirt (Astana), Pawel Poljanski (Bora-hansgrohe), Mattia Cattaneo and Fausto Masnada (Androni Giocattoloi-Sidermec) broke away and joined Samitier, creating a gap of more than 20 seconds with the group of Nibali and Chris Froome. At the last kilometres, Sivakov increased the pace and was only followed by Hirt, but in the final ramp maintained a good pace that distanced him from his companion and gave him his first professional victory of his career.

Sivakov also took the lead of the General Classification while Hirt sits eight seconds behind him and Cattaneo 23 seconds.
