Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec's Fausto Masnada has crossed the finish line of the third stage of the Tour of the Alps in the first position. Chris Froome performed an excellent job as a domestique by controlling the situation for his teammates in the last climb.

The shortest stage of the Alpine race was 106.3 kilometres long between Salorno and Baselga di Pine over a tough route that included one climb of the third category and one of the second. A 12-rider group was formed in the first part of the stage and included names like Antonio Nibali, Manuele Boaro, Carlos Julian Quintero and Simone Velasco.

This group got an advantage of more than three minutes over the pack and the last of its members was caught at around ten kilometres from the end after Bahrain-Merida and Sky took control of the pace. Bahrain-Merida's Vincenzo Nibali and Bora-hansgrohe's Rafal Majka attacked in the last climb but Team Sky's Chris Froome took control of the situation and performed an outstanding job as a domestique, taking his teammates Pavel Sivakov and Tao Geoghegan Hart back to the front.

While the favourites controlled each other, Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec's Fausto Masnada launched an attack that was strong enough for him to cross the finish line by himself. Geoghegan Hart, Majka, Nibali and Astana's Dario Cataldo completed the top five of the day.

Sivakov maintains the lead of the General Classification and is eight seconds ahead of Astana's Jan Hirt and 23 seconds ahead of Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec's Mattia Cattaneo.
