Astana's Jakob Fuglsang has finished in the second position of La Fleche Wallonne. The rider launched an attack at the final climb but Julian Alaphilippe showed to be stronger and crossed the finish line in the first position.

The 2018 season has had a couple of third-places for the Danish rider. He has finished in the third position of the General Classification of Tirreno-Adriatico and the Amstel Gold Race, and he was also in the second position of Strade Bianche, just behind Alaphilippe.

"Should you congratulate me? Yes, I think (he laughs)," he said at the end of the race. "I’m moving one step closer to the top spot of the podium. Sunday I was disappointed with the way we finished the race, throwing away the sprint for the victory, but today we gave all we had to the line.

"When Julian passed me, I managed to get back but I couldn’t go past him. We gave it a nice fight. Normally I would say this race doesn’t fit me so I’m happy to finish on the podium and show I have a very good shape at the moment. I look forward to Sunday.

This is the third time of the season that Fuglsang finishes after Alaphilippe, he also did it in Strade Bianche and the Amstel Gold Race. "We’re good friends and I respect him for the rider he is," the rider commented. "At the end of the day, my speciality is more stage races and that’s where he might have more weaknesses but he is more explosive, which suits him in these races."
