Movistar's Daniele Bennati and Carlos Barbero suffered a heavy crash at the last kilometres of the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon's last stage.

The two riders hit the deck just before the finish of the stage at Villafranca del Bierzo. The stage was 151 kilometres long with a start in Leon that had some tricky curves leading to final metres in a day that was sentenced to a bunch sprint.

"After hard work from the Blues to reduce the bunch in the climbs of Foncebadón (Cat-2) and Onamio (Cat-3) -the peloton coming back together later on-, the dangerous, twisty narrow final kilometre saw Bennati and Barbero both crashing down into one of the final turns," said Movistar in a press statement.

Bennati suffered a big hit to his right hand and shoulder while Barbero hit his elbow, and they were both taken at the moment to a hospital in Ponferrada. Further examinations confirmed that the Italian rider suffered a fracture of the collarbone, while the Spaniard didn't have any serious injuries apart from the pain of the hit.

The crash happened within the last three kilometres of the race, both riders kept their General Classification positions, Bennati the fourth and Barbero the ninth.

The last stage was won by Enrique Sanz (Euskadi-Murias) and Davide Cimolai (Israel Cycling Academy) took the overall victory of the Spanish race.
