Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic has lost one of his support men for the Giro d'Italia as Robert Gesink suffered two fractures at a crash in Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

The Dutchman was set to be one of the helpers for Roglic on the tough mountain stages of the Italian grand tour but luck was not on his side as he took a heavy crash at the last monument of the spring classics. The rider was taken to the hospital straight away and further examinations revealed a broken right collarbone and a fracture in his pelvis.

The weather was a determinant factor in the race and it also played a part in the fall of Gesink. "Robert fell hard on the descent of the Mont-le-Soie," said Jumbo-Visma's sports director Addy Engels. "I was very slippery due to the rain. This is a big blow for himself and for the team looking at the Giro.

"Robert was an important helper for Roglic. He is strong, has shown to be at a good level and is very experienced. We will definitely miss him in the mountains."

Laurens De Plus, who finished in the 17th position of Liege-Bastogne-Liege and is set to be part of the Giro roster, also received the news about Gesink with shock. "This is a loss for the team," he explained. "Robert has been riding very fast in the last weeks."
