Mitchelton-Scott has announced that Sam Bewley will not start at the upcoming Giro d'Italia due to the injuries he suffered during a recon of the Tour de Romandie.

The New Zealander crashed during the recon of the prologue of the Tour de Romandie, a 3.8-kilometre time trial. When the rider hit the deck, he dislocated his left shoulder and the injury also took him out of the Swiss race, which was going to serve as preparation for the Italian grand tour.

"Unfortunately Sam Bewley suffered a dislocated AC joint in his left shoulder in a crash during recon at Tour de Romandie today," said a statement published by Mitchelton-Scott via Twitter. "He will undergo further scans this week, with surgery possible, and so is ruled out of the upcoming Giro d'Italia."

Bewley was part of the 2018 roster for the Corsa Rosa, in which Esteban Chaves won one stage and Simon Yates took three victories and wore the Pink Jersey during 13 stages. The New Zealander was also part of Mitchelton-Scott's line-up at the 2016 Vuelta a España, in which Chaves stepped on the third position of the final podium and Yates won one stage.

The rider has been in Mitchelton-Scott since 2012 and with the team, he has started in seven grand tours: three times in the Giro d'Italia and four in the Vuelta a España, and has shown to be an important domestique for the General Classification leaders and a key part of the team for time trials.
