Movistar Team has confirmed the information that was anticipated the day before: Alejandro Valverde will not be at the start line of the Giro d'Italia.

Valverde suffered a crash on the 25th of April, just before Liege-Bastogne-Liege. As a result of that crash, the World Champion suffered bone oedema in the sacrum that forced him out of the fourth monument of the season and takes him out of the Giro d'Italia roster.

The Corsa Rosa was one of the main goals of the rider, who had the intention of taking stage victories and showing his rainbow jersey in the first grand tour of the season. Mikel Landa will lead the team at the race, but Valverde was going to be one of his helpers while keeping the freedom to fight for his personal success.

"The World Champion will continue to recover, taking no risks, to find back his best form in the upcoming weeks and start building up for the second half of his 2019 season," said a statement of Movistar.

Eusebio Unzue, director of the Spanish formation, said the day before in an interview to Spanish newspaper El Pais, that the rider could now consider participating in the Tour de France, a race in which Nairo Quintana will be the roster's leader. Valverde also has the Vuelta a España as a big part of the second half of his season.
