Tour de Yorkshire
Parkhotel Valkenburg's Lorena Wiebes has taken the victory of the first stage at the ASDA Tour de Yorkshire. The rider outsprinted Christine Majerus and Alison Jackson to take the win in Bedale.
The first stage of the women's race was 132 kilometres long between Barnsley and Bedale. Big crowds gave a warm welcome to riders like Lizzie Deignan, Anna van der Breggen and Marianne Vos at the start line.
The escape of the day was formed by riders like Lizzie Banks (Bigla), Lauren Kitchen (FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope) and Leah Dixon (Brother Tifosi p/b OnForm), who also was voted the most active rider. The escapees were caught with five kilometres to go and the sprinters started trying to find the best position ahead of the final.
Parkhotel Valkenburg's Lorena Wiebes stayed at the wheel of Boels-Dolmans' Christine Majerus and managed to outsprint her at the last moment. Alison Jackson (Team TIBCO-SVB), Roxane Fournier (Movistar) and Lisa Brennauer (WNT-Rotor) completed the top five of the day.
Wiebes also tops the overall classification and will wear the blue leader's jersey during the last stage of the race, which will take the peloton between Bridlington and Scarborough over a 132-kilometre rolling course.
