Groupama-FJD's David Gaudu has celebrated at the third stage of the Tour de Romandie. The Frenchman crossed the uphill finish line in the first position ahead of Rui Costa and Primoz Roglic.

The third stage of the Swiss race was 160 kilometres long with a start and finish in Romont and took the riders through a stage that included two climbs of the second category, two of the third and an uphill finish. Early on the stage, a group of seven riders managed to break free.

The breakaway included names like Kenny Elissonde (Ineos), Andrey Amador (Movistar), Lennard Kämna (Sunweb) and Jan Tratnik (Bahrain-Merida). Behind them, teams like Jumbo-Visma and Groupama-FDJ worked hard to keep the escapees at bay and catch them for the last kilometres.

The escape was at the end caught with 17 kilometres to go, just before the ascent of Villars-Bramard. A reduced group arrived together to the last ascent and the last kilometres witnessed attacks by riders like Davide Villella and Geraint Thomas, who were trying unsuccessfully to leave Primoz Roglic struggling behind.

In the last metres, Rui Costa (UAE-Team Emirates) was the first rider to try an attack but he was caught by David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), who kept going and took the stage victory. Roglic wasn't going to give up and he also accelerated at the last moment and crossed the finish line in the third position.

Michael Woods (EF Education First) and Felix Grossschartner (Bora-hasngrohe) completed the top five of the day. The Slovenian rider of Jumbo-Visma managed to keep the lead of the General Classification, while Gaudu is now six seconds behind him and Costa eight seconds.
