Fernando Gaviria will be one of the main men of UAE-Team Emirates at the Giro d'Italia. The rider is making his return to the Italian grand tour in which he already achieved several victories in 2017.

The Emirati team is doing a shift from supporting Fabio Aru to achieve stage victories in the Corsa Rosa. Since it's known that the Italian rider can't lead the roster in his home country due to health issues, the focus changed to choosing riders that can take the day's glory at the race.

Gaviria already knows what it is like to win in the Italian grand tour as he took four stage victories in his first and only participation in 2017. "With great pleasure, I will return to the roads of the Giro d'Italia, which I feel a special relationship with," he commented.

"With the 2017 Giro, my career took its international dimension. The points classification jersey and the four stage victories lifted me into the elite sprinters' group. Those were beautiful and very important moments for me, the thought of having the chance to relive them is exciting."

In the 2018 edition of the race, Gaviria will have the chance to face some of the most successful sprinters of the moment like his former teammate Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), Groupama-FDJ's Arnaud Demare and Bora-hansgrohe's Pascal Ackermann. "In the first part of the Giro, the stages will offer sprinters a good number of opportunities," the Colombian explained.

"As often happens in the Giro, there will be no straightforward stages, so even we sprinters and our teams will always have to fight for the sprint finish. The goal is to make the most of the opportunities to compete in sprints. It will be very difficult to fight for the points classification because the second part of the Giro will be almost exclusively for the climbers."

The upcoming week, UAE-Team Emirates will announce the complete line-up for the Giro d'Italia.
