Katusha-Alpecin's Rick Zabel has taken the victory of the second stage of the Tour de Yorkshire. The German rider beat Boy Van Poppel and Christopher Lawless to get the day's win.

The peloton went through the exact same 132-kilometre route that the women's peloton tackled earlier on the day for the second stage of the race. The escape of the day was initially formed by Fabien Grellier and he was later joined by Thomas Stewart, Jacob Scott and Christopher McGlinchey.

This group built a gap of more than a minute with the peloton and despite the toughness of the climbs and that its members got separated at certain moments, they remained together for most of the course. With 16 kilometres to go, Stewart and McGlinchey changed the rhythm and left his companions to be caught by the pack.

All of them were finally caught with four kilometres to go and the peloton remained together and organised itself to face a bunch sprint. Katusha-Alpecin's Rick Zabel showed to have the stronger legs and crossed the finish line ahead of Boy van Poppel (Roompot-Charles) and Christopher Lawless.

The winner of the first stage of the race Jesper Asselman (Roompot Charles) maintains the lead of the General Classification while his teammate Van Poppel took the lead of the points classification.
