Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin has finished the opening time trial of the Giro d'Italia in the fifth position. The Dutchman was 28 seconds slower than the stage's winner Primoz Roglic.

Dumoulin was the first rider to tackle the fight against the clock and he completed the eight-kilometre course in 13 minutes and 22 seconds. The Slovenian rider finished the route not too long after him and stopped the clock in 12 minutes and 54 seconds, taking like this the Pink Jersey on the first day.

"It was a tough time trial with the super steep final climb," commented Dumoulin at the finish. "I was completely on the limit but I think I paced myself pretty well. I kept a little bit back on the flat before the climb.

"I went all out and of course hoped for the win, but it wasn’t possible. It is what it is and I am still satisfied with my performance; we are only eight kilometres into the Giro and at this point, Roglic is better than the rest."
