Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic has become the first Slovenian to wear the Pink Jersey at the Giro d'Italia. The rider beat all the rivals at the opening time trial in Bologna.

Roglic completed the eight-kilometre individual time trial of the opening stage of the Corsa Rosa in 12 minutes and 54 seconds, beating Simon Yates by 19 seconds, Vincenzo Nibali by 23 seconds and Miguel Angel Lopez and Tom Dumoulin by 28 seconds. The rider showed to be strong through the course and decided to not change his bike at the bottom of the climb, arriving to the finish line on his time trial bike.

The Slovenian had to wait almost three hours in the hot seat until the last rider, Team Ineos' Salvatore Puccio, crossed the finish line. "I'm super happy," said the rider at the end of the stage. "I have been waiting now for three hours but it is really really nice to get Pink today.

"There was not really much of a tactic, it was just going through the whole course as fast as possible and we did a good job."

The rider started the race as favourite and now gets strong in that position by taking gaps of around 20 seconds with his direct rivals. "Yes, there is a gap but you always want more and more," Roglic explained. "But winning is winning and the first day is behind us and it is a really nice start."
