Bora-hansgrohe's Pascal Ackermann has taken his first grand tour victory at the Giro d'Italia. The rider crossed the finish line ahead of Elia Viviani and Caleb Ewan.

This is the first Giro d'Italia for Ackermann and he kicked off the race in a high note. The rider showed to have very strong legs and despite starting the sprint from behind, he could achieve a speed that was impossible to equal by his competitors.

"I'm so happy, this was my first chance to win a stage and we did it," said the German national champion at the end of the stage. "I think now all the team is more motivated and that is good for the next three weeks.

"I saw 250 (metres) to go when I started the sprint and I said 'ok now I have to take my speed and go full gas' and luckily it was enough."

Ackermann is the designated sprinter for Bora-hansgrohe, who is taking the position that Sam Bennett had in 2018 and in which he took three stage victories, and he could feel the stress to try to also be successful in the race. "It was a big pressure and this is also my first grand tour and you never know what will happen in your first grand tour," he explained. "I'm just being happy to have won the first stage."
