The second stage of the 2019 Giro d'Italia has been challenging due to the cold and rainy weather conditions. Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb), Fernando Gaviria (UAE-Team Emirates), Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) and Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) expressed their impressions after the finish line.

Tom Dumoulin:

The weather conditions were pretty terrible in the opening 100 kilometres, with a lot of rain. It was a fast stage and combined with the rain it made for quite a tough day out but thankfully it was dry for the finale. The guys did a super job throughout the stage and we worked hard on the climbs to be positioned at the front for the descents. I’m really happy with how we rode as a team today.

Fernando Gaviria:

"I didn't feel great from the start, maybe down to the cold weather.
I held on and would have loved to make the best of the perfect lead-out from my teammates. It's a few weeks since I've last raced but I'm confident I'll be back to full race pace soon."

Elia Viviani:

"I was in a good position, but Ackermann anticipated the sprint in the tailwind, while I waited too much before kicking out. I had a very fast 50 meters, but that wasn’t enough. On the plus side, the feeling is good and our team is motivated, which gives me confidence ahead of the next sprint stages.

Simon Yates:

"There were a lot of teams riding, and the guys did a great job of keeping me out of the wind so for me personally, it was quite an easy day. There were a few hard moments, but the boys looked after me really well which helps. There were a little bit of nerves on the climbs towards the finish, I think it was just the general nerves from the first day of a Grand Tour and people were just trying to stay safe. It kept splitting the bunch, especially with the heavy legs from the rain, but we all arrived safely to the finish."
