Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin has been a victim of the mass crash at the final kilometres of the fourth stage of the Giro d'Italia and he arrived to the finish line at more than four minutes from the day's winner Richard Carapaz.

Team Ineos' Salvatore Puccio caused a massive crash at five kilometres from the finish in Frascatti and Dumoulin was the only of the favourites to be affected by it. Just after the fall, the television cameras showed the rider with blood on his knee but still going at a good pace.

Moments later, the rider slowed down and was then joined by his teammates, who took him safely to the finish line at more than four minutes from Carapaz. Images showed Dumoulin getting to the bus with difficulty and his knee seemed to be the problem.

"I'm going to sleep on it overnight and then I'll decide tomorrow," said the rider to Dutch media after being asked if he is going to continue in the race. "The General Classification is over."

The doctors of the team also commented to the Dutch journalists that the rider hasn't suffered any fractures. "But I have a big egg on my knee and that will not get smaller," he added.

Dumoulin is now in the 56th position of the overall classification of the Corsa Rosa, four minutes and 30 seconds behind Primoz Roglic.
