Mitchelton-Scott's Simon Yates has also crashed at the final kilometres of the fourth stage at the Giro d'Italia. The Briton hit the deck at a roundabout just after the mass crash that affected other riders.

The final stretch of the fourth day of competition at the Corsa Rosa was nervous and eventful. Moments after the crash caused by Salvatore Puccio that affected riders from Katusha-Alpecin and Sunweb, another group of riders hit the deck at a roundabout, including GC favourite Simon Yates.

"Everyone was fighting for position on a roundabout with about six kilometres to go and a rider has slid out in front of me," Yates mentioned at the end of the stage. "It was no one’s fault, it was just in the fight for position and these things happen. I got up quickly and I had the guys around me to limit the losses.”

"I’ve hit my knee and hip, just on the left side, but I’m OK. We’ll see how I pull up tomorrow, it’s always worse in the morning, but the Giro is long. We just try to stay safe, that’s what everyone is trying to do. Crashes are a part of our sport."
