Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin has withdrawn from the Giro d'Italia during the fifth stage of the race. The injuries he suffered the day before proved to be too painful for the rider to continue.

The winner of the 2017 edition of the Corsa Rosa has stepped out of the race during the fifth stage of the race that took the riders through a 140-kilometre route between Frascati and Terracina.

Dumoulin was one of the victims of a mass crash caused by Team Ineos' Salvatore Puccio at the final stretch of the fourth stage. The Dutchman could be seen with blood on his knee just after the crash and he and his teammates arrived to the finish line at more than four seconds behind the day's winner Richard Carapaz.

Examinations performed after the finish of the stage didn't show any fractures or serious injuries in the leg of the rider, but he ended the day with a swollen knee, the doubt of whether to continue in the race and the disappointment of knowing his GC chances were over. In the end, he gave it a try in the first kilometres of the fifth stage, but the pain proved to be too much for him to continue.

The Giro d'Italia was one of the main goals of the Dutch rider for the 2019 season, but he hasn't ruled out to be at the start line of the Tour de France.
