Fabio Jakobsen took the third victory for Deceuninck-Quick-Step in the Tour of California. The rider follows Kasper Asgreen and Remi Cavagna as the team's stage victors in the American race.

The fourth stage of the race took the riders between Raceway Laguna Seca and Morro Bay over a 215.5-kilometre stage that finished in a bunch sprint. "I had strong legs today, but also a formidable lead-out, which kept me out of the wind, protected me in those hectic final kilometres and delivered me where I needed to be for the sprint," said the Dutchman after the finish line.

"This uphill drag to the line forced me to push hard, but I was confident and waited for the perfect moment to kick out and take another win for our team."

Jakobsen crossed the finish line ahead of UAE-Team Emirates' Jasper Philipsen and Bora-hansgrohe's Peter Sagan. Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) and Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg (Dimension Data) completed the top-five of the day.

"What makes us so successful? We are a great group of riders, all willing to sacrifice ourselves and work hard for each other," explained the Dutchman. "It's worth mentioning also that we came here in good shape and the previous wins this week gave us a lot of confidence, so we're just riding the wave at the moment and seizing every opportunity we get."

Race overall leader Tejay Van Garderen (EF Education First) suffered a mechanical problem and a crash in the last kilometres of the stage. The peloton, of which the American rider was not part of, was also held back by a crash and the race organisation decided to give everybody the same time as the front group, which caused a controversy at the end of the stage.

Van Garderen kept the lead of the overall classification.
