Boels-Dolmans' Anna van der Breggen has taken a solo victory in the first stage of the Amgen Tour of California women's race empowered by SRAM. The Dutchwoman attacked in the last stretch of the route and crossed the finish line 18 seconds ahead of Elisa Balsamo.

The first stage of the 2019 edition of the American race was 96.5-kilometres long from Ventura through the Ojai Valley to the scenic coastal town of Carpinteria before returning to Ventura. The stage had action from the beginning with several attacks and a peloton repelling them all.

At around 80 kilometres to go, Lindsay Goldman (Supermint) managed to break free and built a gap of more than a minute with the pack but 20 kilometres later, the peloton increased the pace, which made it smaller and got closer to the escapee. With 54 kilometres to go, Goldman was caught by a pack that was now reduced and continued to get smaller due to the climbs.

Olga Zabelinskaya (Cogeas-Mettler) attacked at with around 30 kilometres remaining and rapidly took an advantage of more than a minute with the reduced pack, which was soon hit by winds that caused echelons. The Uzbekistani was caught just past the four-kilometre mark and the last climb of the day witnessed the attack of World Champion Anna van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans).

Behind her, Lizzie Deignan (Trek-Segafredo) and Zabelinskaya made a move together to try to bring her back, but the Dutch woman was too strong and crossed the finish line by herself. The two chasers were caught in the last kilometres by a selected group.

Elisa Balsamo (Valcar Cylance), Arlenis Sierra (Astana), Leah Kirchmann (Sunweb) and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (CCC-Liv) completed the top five of the day.
