UAE-Team Emirates' Tadej Pogacar has won the Queen Stage of the Tour of California. The rider crossed the finish line just ahead of Sergio Higuita and also climbed to the top of the General Classification.

Teams like Trek-Segafredo and EF Education First -which was trying to defend Tejay Van Garderen's overall lead- led the peloton throughout the stage to catch the escapees. They managed to reel the escape back in at the last stretch of the final climb of the day and almost right away Higuita attacked and was followed by Jumbo-Visma's George Bennett and Pogacar, while Van Garderen was already too far behind to keep the leaders' jersey.

Higuita was the first rider to make a move but was soon caught by the Slovenian, who then accelerated and surpassed the Colombian at the last moment. "It was amazing," said the rider of UAE-Team Emirates at the end of the stage.

"Once again my team did a really good job protecting me all day, leading me onto the final climb and supporting me all the way that they could. I just did my best in the last five kilometres. I was starting my sprint behind Higuita and he made mistake on the last corner and I went through it much faster than he so was able to come around for the win. It feels really good. I hope tomorrow I can hold onto the jersey – for sure it would be the biggest win of my career."

The 20-year-old has already taken one overall victory in 2019 at the Volta ao Algarve, but if he takes this win this will be his first triumph in a WorldTour race.
