Lotto Soudal's Caleb Ewan has won the final sprint at the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Australian beat Elia Viviani and Pascal Ackermann to take the day's victory.
The eighth day of competition in the Corsa Rosa was 239 kilometres long -the longest of the 2019 edition of the race- over a course that included two climbs of the fourth category and one of the third. Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), Louis Vervaeke (Sunweb) and Francois Bidard (AG2R La Mondiale) formed an escape in the last stretch of the race and were reeled back in with six kilometres to go.
The compact group arrived to the final kilometres and the leader of the points classification Pascal Ackermann was the first rider to launch the final sprint and he was soon joined by Ewan and Viviani. The Australian rider was the fastest to cross the finish line ahead of the Italian national champion and the wearer of the Ciclamino jersey.
Valerio Conti (UAE-Team Emirates) arrived to the finish line with the peloton and extends his lead of the overall classification one more day. The next stage of the race will be the second individual time trial of the race, which will be 34.8 kilometres long between Riccione and San Marino.
