Groupama-FDJ's Arnaud Demare has taken the victory of the 10th stage final sprint at the Giro d'Italia. A crash at the Flamme Rouge affected Bora-hansgrohe's Pascal Ackermann, who was moments later seen going to the finish line with abrasions on his right side.
After the rest day, the peloton faced a 145-kilometre stage between Ravenna and Modena over a flat route that was always likely to finish in a bunch sprint. The escape of the day was formed by Hatsuyama and Covili, who built a gap of more than three minutes with the pack.
In the peloton, teams with sprinters like Bora-hansgrohe, Groupama-FDJ and Deceuninck-Quick-Step took control of the pace to force a fast finale. With around 30 kilometres to go, the duo was reeled back in and the peloton continued at a good pace towards Modena.
With two kilometres to go, Francisco Ventoso (CCC Team) attacked and created a gap with the pack. The peloton caught the Spaniard just after the Flamme Rouge but at the same moment, there was a crash in the pack that affected Bora-hansgrohe's Pascal Ackermann and prevented him to fight for the victory.
Groupama-FDJ's Arnaud Demare launched a strong sprint that couldn't be equalled by Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) or Rüdiger Selig (Bora-hansgrohe). Lotto Soudal's Caleb Ewan and Dimension Data's Giacomo Nizzolo completed the top five of the day.
UAE-Team Emirates' Valerio Conti crossed the finish line with the peloton and extended his overall lead.
