UAE-Team Emirates' Fabio Aru has returned to training on the road after the surgery in his iliac artery. The Italian has been tackling the mountains of Sestriere and Vialattea to return to his old shape.

In videos and pictures of the 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia, Aru makes an appearance celebrating the Pink Jersey of his teammate Jan Polanc. The rider paid a visit to the Corsa Rosa roster in a region where he has been training and testing the state of his leg, in which he underwent surgery at the beginning of April.

"As soon as the doctors gave me the green light, I went back to the saddle and do a period of training in altitude," said the rider to Italian news website Valsusa Oggi. "I was quite clear on where to start again. Sestriere is my second home, here I have always found myself very well in terms of athletic preparation and there are a variety of alpine routes where I can train. This is a truly optimal environment where I can always count on many friends.

"Day after day my physical condition improves, even more rapidly than initially assumed. I will stay here in Sestriere until the beginning of June and then, together with the team, I will take a look at the situation for the second part of the season."
