Movistar's Mikel Landa launched a strong and long attack in the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia in an attempt to win back time in the overall classification.

The Spaniard launched an attack with around 17 kilometres to go and after keeping a high pace for the remaining kilometres of the stage, he crossed the finish line in the third position, one minute and 20 seconds behind the day's winner Ilnur Zakarin. The rider climbed 13 positions in the General Classification and sits in the eighth place, five minutes and eight seconds behind the Pink Jersey wearer Jan Polanc.

"The final has been very tough, particularly since I attacked from far behind and because of the kilometres that I had left and the altitude, I arrived exhausted!" Landa commented at the finish line. "I heard in the radio that I had around a minute and a half of advantage and I'm very happy about that, mostly because I've seen the rivals weaker and closer to the rest of us. And that gives me the strength to keep going."

His performance so far in the mountains gives Landa more enthusiasm to keep this aggressive style. "I will have to keep attacking as long as my legs allow it," he explained. "I hope to have the strength until Verona, but it is too soon to talk and the Giro easily changes from one day to the next. So I will keep doing it day by day.

"The final victory has been possible from the beginning but I've had difficult days and there are many riders that want to win. We are just in the 13th stage and we have to continue day by day."
