Astana tried again an attacking move at the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia but it was stopped by a mechanical problem in Miguel Angel Lopez' bike. The rider crossed the finish line four minutes and 19 seconds behind stage winner Ilnur Zakarin.
The team had once again a tactical move prepared and it was being successful until the Colombian rider suffered a mechanical with 12 kilometres to go. Due to this problem, he was left behind by the favourites' group and had to join the Maglia Rosa's, working hard to minimize the loses as much as possible.
"Bad luck struck again and then I had to make a big effort," Lopez explained. "At the end I paid a little for those efforts. But the positive side is that I arrived to the finish, though I don't know the times yet. We have to see what happens tomorrow and the days after.
"Sometimes you want to do great things but it was what it was and it happened how it happened. There is still a lot of Giro to go and I won't lose my morale because of today. I will continue with my high morale. I'm still here and I'm healthy, nothing really bad has happened and it is important to realise that more difficult days are coming and I will face them."
Despite his problems, the Colombian climbed six positions in the General Classifications and is in the 10th place, seven minutes and 48 seconds behind the overall leader Jan Polanc.
