Katusha-Alpecin's Ilnur Zakarin took a solo victory at the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Russian was part of the breakaway and dropped his last companion with two kilometres to go.

Zakarin crossed the finish line in Ceresole Reale 35 seconds ahead of Mikel Nieve, taking his second victory in the race -the first one was stage eleven in 2015. The rider climbed nine positions in the General Classification and is now in the third place, at two minutes and 56 seconds from overall leader Jan Polanc

"I didn’t have any plan for winning this stage," said the rider. "I went in the breakaway with the aim of making up some time on GC. This win is a little bit of a surprise for me. I just rode the last climb with all the energy and the power I had. I’m happy with what I’ve achieved today. Roglic is really strong. He’s the number one favourite but I’ll try to take the Maglia Rosa in the coming stages.

"I came to the Giro d'Italia to aim for the top five of the General Classification and I hope to succeed. Until the middle of the stage, I wasn't feeling so good, then I warmed up and felt great. I have benefited a lot in the overall standings."
