Movistar displayed outstanding tactical work in the 16th stage of the Giro d'Italia. Richard Carapaz was kept in a good position the entire course and extended his overall lead at the end of the day.
The Ecuadorian stayed close to Vincenzo Nibali during most of the stage and his teammates helped him control the gaps at all times in order to protect the Maglia Rosa. Mikel Landa pulled for most of the climb of the Mortirolo, while on the descent they were joined by Andrey Amador, who was part of the breakaway of the day.
"It was a very difficult stage, with many metres of climbing and I think we did very good teamwork," said Carapaz at the finish line. "We simply tried to control the situation, to keep the gaps under control and at the end, we were the majority in the group, so I think our work of the day was perfect.
"Today we did an outstanding work and that is reflected in the time that I got today. We are today a little bit calmer but we know that there is still a long way to go. All these years I've learned many things and one of them is to know how to stay calm because when I do that, things work out properly."
