Richard Carapaz extended his overall lead by six seconds over direct rivals like Vincenzo Nibali and Primoz Roglic in the 17th stage of the Giro d'Italia.

Almost as a birthday present, the Ecuadorian managed to extend a bit the gap he has over the other General Classification riders. On his 26th birthday, the rider arrived to the finish line six seconds ahead of the group that included Vincenzo Nibali and Primoz Roglic, after following an attack in the last kilometres by Miguel Angel Lopez.

"I saw that Lopez launched an attack and I took advantage of that wheel," Carapaz commented at the finish line. "Then I saw that we were some metres ahead so I didn't hesitate and I kept going. These seconds are a real birthday gift and I will try to keep getting seconds because at the end they can be very valuable.

"With Mikel, we are going very well in the race and today he made a very good move at the end after a tough day like yesterday. The day before we were really cold."

Carapaz sits in the first position of the General Classification, one minute and 54 seconds ahead of Nibali and two minutes and 16 seconds ahead of Roglic, who is still also a threat due to his time trial skills. "There is still a lot of race to be done and we still have mountain days ahead of us and I hope to keep getting seconds over Roglic ahead of the time trial," he explained.
