The big star of the 16th stage of the Giro d'Italia was Nans Peters and his first pro victory, but other things happened in the breakaway and with the favourites. Vincenzo Nibali, Primoz Roglic, Miguel Angel Lopez and Davide Formolo shared their impressions after the finish line.
Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida)
"In these cases, we can only say that it was not a right day. Since the morning, I have felt I have no great feelings. I lost a few seconds from Carapaz but we have limited the damage."
Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma)
"It was a nice ride with many Slovenian supporters along the way. I enjoyed it immensely. It is important to stay fit and healthy. I’m still having some problems with my chest after my crash on Sunday, but my stomach is starting to feel better and I remain optimistic. I will continue to fight until the end."
Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana)
"It was our plan to attack, but, in a stage like today, it is easier to plan something or even to do a move than to stay in front and keep your advantage. Our team did a great job today and in the end, Jan Hirt was super strong. Maybe, we went in front a bit earlier. So, in the end, I did my attack later and I could go away with Carapaz. Well, it was a good move, but after yesterday’s tough stage I could not get more. I hope tomorrow we will have a chance to recover a bit before the last two hard days in the mountains."
Davide Formolo (Bora-hansgrohe)
"Yesterday was a tough day and we didn't know what would be possible today. We wanted to try and get into the breakaway because there was a good chance that they might succeed. I was able to get into the break and we carved out a considerable advantage to the main field. In the end, it became clear that the winner of today's stage would come from the group of escapees and I wanted to give my best to have a chance. In the end, it wasn't enough and I could not catch up to the sole leader but I am still happy with third place."
