Damiano Cima (Nippo-Vini Fantini) beat the peloton and took the victory of the 18th stage of the Giro d'Italia. The rider was part of the escape and managed to cross the finish line just ahead of the pack.
Cima was part of a three-man breakaway that survived until the last kilometre. Despite the efforts of the peloton to catch the escapees, the Italian rider was faster than it and he beat Pascal Ackermann and Simone Consonni to take his first victory in his first Giro d'Italia.
"To give my team visibility throughout breakaways was one of the roles I was assigned by my team," said the rider at the finish line. "In addition to the visibility, today I delivered the stage victory. It wasn’t easy to make the breakaway today because many riders were playing according to the Maglia Ciclamino.
"We were three at the front and I thank my breakaway companions for the good cooperation we had. I remained as calm as I could in the last kilometres. I never looked back. I waited as much as possible to give it all in the last few hundred meters."
