Esteban Chaves put an end to a difficult year with a victory in the 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Colombian rider of Mitchelton-Scott launched a late attack and crossed the finish line by himself.

Chaves took the victory of the sixth stage at the 2018 Corsa Rosa and soon after a health crisis started. The rider fought with the Epstein-Barr virus, allergies and sinus problems and had to stop riding for a while, but all the efforts to come back to his shape were rewarded at the 19th stage of the 2019 edition of the race.

"It's unbelievable, I don't have words for this," said Chaves. "It's a lot of work that we have put together, my family, my team, my friends, everyone knows how hard we worked. I never gave up and the climb of the day showed that, I attacked many, many times until I could drop everyone.

"It was just happiness, it was like I took a really heavy weight off my back and it's the result from all the hard work in the last two or three years. This shows me I can do it, this shows me that I'm not over and it shows me that I can do this for a long, long time.

The Colombian was part of the escape of the day and during the last ascent of the day, he launched a strong attack that couldn't be matched by the other escapees. The rider crossed the finish line by himself and went on to celebrate with his parents, who travelled from Colombia to be with his son.

"In the last climb, because it's not super steep I had to attack many, many times and this last climb is like life; you need to keep trying, keep going, keep fighting, keep attacking because you never know when you drop everyone and arrive at the finish line with the victory."
