Bahrain-Merida's Vincenzo Nibali finished the 20th stage of the Giro d'Italia in the second overall position after he attempted several attacks, but none could give him a good advantage over the rivals.
Nibali crossed the finish line in Monte Avena in the fifth position, just behind the GC leader Richard Carapaz, after trying several tactics to gain some time over the competitors. The Italian couldn't shake off the rivals and all of them arrived together to the finish line, which he crossed in the fifth position.
"It was not easy to make the difference because the pink jersey and his team kept the race always controlled, imposing an important rhythm in the first two climbs," said Nibali. "In the end, I tried several times to attack but Carapaz showed he deserves first place.
"I have no regrets in this Giro, every day I tried to interpret the race better and tomorrow I hope to make a good ITT and to confirm my second place."
Miguel Angel Lopez lost some time after a fan pushed him off his bike and Nibali himself knows what is like to suffer the consequences of this type of accidents as he had to retire from the 2018 Tour de France with a broken vertebra due to an event that involved public.
"They just told me what happened to Miguel Angel Lopez and once again I want to invite the fans to respect the riders," he explained. "It is right to support the runners but remaining on the sides of the road and not touching them or pushing them so that such serious events do not happen again."
