Alexander Kristoff (UAE-Team Emirates) sprinted to claim the victory of the fifth stage of the Tour of Norway. The rider also took the lead of the General Classification at the end of the stage.
The fifth day of competition in Norway was 159.7 kilometres long between Skien and Drammen and finished in a bunch sprint in which Kristoff powered to victory. The Norwegian rider crossed the finish line ahead of Alvaro Hodeg (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) and Kristoffer Halvorsen (Ineos), while Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) -who had the leader's jersey up until the end of this day- and Yves Lampaert (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) completed the top five of the day.
"At 20 km to the finish line, there was a split in the group but the team brought me back, just in time to get the lead-out formation right for the sprint," said Kristoff at the end of the stage. "I started the sprint in the leading positions, and the legs felt good. I'm really happy with the win and to get the yellow jersey is an added bonus.
"Tomorrow we will try to defend the jersey, it won't be easy, but we will give it our best shot. I'd like to thank my teammates because they have been fantastic, especially on the climbs and getting me through some of the sketchy moments in the bunch."
