Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) has taken his sixth podium place in the Giro d'Italia. The Italian defended his second overall position in the closing time trial of Verona.
The rider has won the Corsa Rosa twice -in 2013 and 2016- and has been on the final podium another four times, the latest after finishing the time trial in Verona in the ninth position, 23 seconds behind the stage's winner Chad Haga. As such, the rider confirmed his second place in the General Classification of the race.
"I have no regrets," Nibali commented at the Verona Arena. "I think my Giro was good and the whole team performed well. It was a very tough and intense race. My rivals were really strong and to take the final win wasn’t easy.
"(Carapaz) showed to be in extraordinary shape and with his team they did an excellent race. The leaders of the various teams controlled each other, especially in the first part of the Giro, but I can’t say we made some mistakes. Carapaz was very strong and we tried to attack him but without success. He deserved this victory. All in all, I can be satisfied with my Giro, in particular, if we consider that less than nine months have passed since my bad injury at the Tour de France... I made a lot of sacrifices and I worked hard and that makes this result even more important."
