The Dutch Cycling Federation has confirmed that Mathieu van der Poel will start in the World Championships of Yorkshire. This will be the first time of the Dutch national champion in the competition.

The participation of Van der Poel was uncertain, considering that he is active in three disciplines: road cycling, cyclocross and mountain bike. The rider has decided to skip this year's mountain bike world championships -which are going to be held between the 28th of August and the first of September) to focus on the road championships.

"Of course I think it is very unfortunate that I have to leave aside the mountain bike World Championships, but choices have to be made," said the Dutchman. "I cannot deny that the World Championship course in Yorkshire should suit me, that is why I am resolutely choosing the road competition this year.

"Moreover, I absolutely want to be present at the (mountain bike) test event in Tokyo. The 2020 Olympic Games are still my big goal. To combine the three is not possible."

The Netherlands national coach Koos Moerenhout is pleased with Van der Poel's choice. "I am happy that we can include Mathieu in the Dutch selection for Yorkshire," he commented. "I am convinced that we will go with a strong team and that with Van der Poel, the strength of the Dutch team is increasing."
