Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) was the fastest man at the finish line of the first stage in the Criterium du Dauphine. The rider also took the lead of the General Classification at the end of the day.

The last time the rider took a victory in a WorldTour race was in the 19th stage of the 2017 Tour de France. The Norwegian had to stand the climbs of the day to arrive with the peloton to the final kilometre, where he launched a sprint that couldn't be equalled by Philippe Gilbert or Wout van Aert.

"I am really happy with today's win," said the Norwegian after the podium ceremony. "It has been a while since I have won in the World Tour, so this is a great win for me and for Team Dimension Data. I was really suffering on the climb, but I managed to stay there in the group while the best sprinters were dropped.

"That worked out really well for me. I had good speed in the sprint and am just really happy to have won and to take the yellow jersey, even if only for a few days."
