Jumbo-Visma's Wout van Aert has taken the victory at the fourth stage's individual time trial of the Criterium du Dauphine. Adam Yates finished 56 seconds behind the Belgian rider and this was enough for him to take the lead of the General Classification.
The 26.1-kilometre individual time trial in Roanne started with the news of Chris Froome withdrawing from the race due to a crash he suffered at an early recon.
Katusha-Alpecin's Alex Dowsett -who is a specialist in the discipline- was one of the first riders to get the best time with 35 minutes and 16 seconds, but he was soon beaten by Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Julian Alaphilippe, who stopped the clock at 34 minutes and 37 seconds. Moments later, Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) finished the circuit in 34 minutes and 25 seconds, starting like this a long time on the hot seat.
The time of the Dutchman was beaten by Jumbo-Visma's Wout van Aert, who completed the course in 33 minutes and 38 seconds, and moments later EF Education First's Tejay Van Garderen finished in the second place with a time of 33 minutes and 38 seconds.
Adam Yates completed the course in 34 minutes and 37 seconds, finishing in the sixth position of the day and which was enough for him to take the leader's jersey at the end of the stage. Dylan Teuns fell to the second place of the overall classification at four seconds from the rider of Mitchelton-Scott and Van Garderen is six seconds behind the leader.
