Wout Poels was doing recon of the time trial course of the Criterium du Dauphine with Chris Froome at the moment that the Briton crashed.

The Dutchman was going through the route of the individual time trial just behind Froome the moment that the wind hit the rider and threw him to the ground, causing him fractures in the femur, the elbow and the ribs. Poels was in shock and had to take time to recover to face the stage himself.

"You often see crashes in racing, but when I saw Chris fall, I was in shock," said the rider to Dutch and Belgian media. "We were riding at around 65 kilometres per hour, just after the climb, in the descent. I was behind him. The wind hit his front wheel and caused him to crash hard, it was that. It went very quickly. I was at around ten metres behind him and it was a hard blow.

"If you crash at such a speed, and we only have this suit on, that is not nice. We don't wear motorcycle suits. He fell heavily. I did not see how they carried him into the ambulance. The team management car drove behind him and an ambulance was fortunately on the spot, coincidentally at around 100 metres away. I waited a moment, but I didn't want to see him lying there. I knew that he was in good hands, that he was well taken care of and that I couldn't do much for him."

Poels then had to focus on the time trial that was ahead of him, but it was not easy. "Then you get in the bus and you have to recover and switch something in your head because you have to get back to work," he explained. "The race continues as usual, the switch must be turned and focus again. That took a while."
